How to elect Quick Method (Form GST74)

The calculator estimates remittance. Electing Quick Method is a separate CRA step. This is a short orientation only — not tax advice. Confirm timing and eligibility on Canada.ca.

  1. Check you can use it. Typical themes include worldwide taxable supplies (GST/HST included) at or under the ~$400,000 threshold and not being in an excluded profession (for example accounting, bookkeeping, legal, or financial services). VERIFY current rules in CRA RC4058.
  2. Elect before the period starts (usual pattern). File Form GST74 or elect in CRA My Business Account so the election applies to the reporting period you want. Annual filers often face a different deadline than quarterly/monthly filers — confirm the due date for your filing frequency before you rely on this estimate.
  3. Stay on it for at least one fiscal year in the usual case, unless you revoke or become ineligible. Keep charging full Ontario HST (13%) on invoices; you change how you calculate remittance, not the rate on the invoice.
  4. File as usual (NETFILE / return) after the election is in effect. Use your books (or this site’s estimate as a worksheet aid) — do not treat the on-screen difference as an instruction to elect.

Québec filers generally elect with Revenu Québec instead. Multi-province supplies and capital-property ITCs under Quick Method are outside this FAQ. Always re-confirm on Canada.ca or with a qualified tax professional before filing.

1% annual credit 1% of first $30,000 Eligible tax-included supplies / fiscal year (up to $300)

Eligibility (e.g. ~$400,000 taxable-supplies threshold, excluded professions, GST74 election timing) is not validated by this calculator. Certain capital-property ITCs may still be claimable under QM — not modelled here.
